There is a new warning put out by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency....Sherwood brand Pirate's Gold Milk Chocolate coins are being recalled due to the fact that they contain Melamine, the ingredient in milk product that has caused many infant deaths in china.

These candies are sold at Costco, as well as many bulk and dollar stores. Please make sure to check your children's Halloween candy and DO NOT LET THEM EAT THE PIRATE COINS!

With so many eco-friendly baby bottles hitting the market, it can be really hard understand the differences between all of them, much less choose.

Feeding your baby should be an absolutely magical experience. Whether your baby is breastfed or bottlefed, there is an amazing bond developed when you look down into those innocent little eyes that are fixated on you and only you in complete and utter adoration. That moment can be ruined instantly when you begin to worry about chemicals leaching into your baby's body through her bottle and the bottle and formula.

So how do you get started selecting the right bottle for you? There is so much information, and there are so many options. It can almost seem overwhelming. Frankly, your biggest guide in choosing a bottle will be determined by your little master. Yes, her vote will be made clear rather quickly (and loudly). But to guide you in your choices, keep in mind that recent reports from both the National Institutes of Health (2005) and the Environmental Working Group (2007) have found phthalates and bisphenol-A to leach from plastic baby bottles, as well as from the cans containing infant formula. So you are wise to seek out healthier options. Bisphenol-A has been linked to abnormal development of the brain and reproductive systems, and phthalates seem to be hormone disruptors that particularly affect our reproductive systems. Before you begin experimenting with brands however, here are a few guidelines suggested by the wonderful people over at Environmental Working Group, one of the preeminent environmental health organizations.

Choosing a Nipple: Avoid #3 plastics and start with a clear silicone nipple, which is much safer than plastic or rubber. Latex rubber nipples can cause allergic reactions and can contain impurities linked to cancer.

The Bottle: Use glass whenever possible. Avoid clear, hard plastic bottles marked with a “7” or “PC.”

Plastic bottle liners: Just so bad. Don’t use them. The soft plastic liners leach chemicals into formula, especially when heated. Editor's Note: Playtex recently released a statement saying that the Drop-Ins® (aka 'plastic bottle liners') for their Original Nurser Systems are BPA-free.

Water: Use filtered tap water. If your water is fluoridated, use a reverse osmosis filter to remove fluoride, which the American Dental Association recommends avoiding when reconstituting formula. If your water is not fluoridated use a carbon filter. If you choose bottled water make sure it’s fluoride-free.

Formula: Choose powdered as liquid formulas have higher levels of BPA.

Here are the brands we EcoMoms have found our babies love and that we feel good about. Remember, you may have to try a few before you find one your baby likes. Adiri’s products have been re-engineered to be bisphenol-A-free and polycarbonate-free and are getting rave reviews from moms and babes alike.

Finally, Wee-Go Glass Baby Bottles have a brightly colored protective sleeve will make you feel better about giving your baby glass. They are a bit more expensive, but they are free of bisphenol-A, phthalate, PVC, and polycarbonates! And the nipple is made from latex-free silicone. We have dropped these glass bottles several times from 8 feet and have yet to damage

one.

Teaching Kids About the Environment with Dr. Suess

My daughter Zoe turns three tomorrow...which I honestly cannot believe. I have been thinking a lot lately about just what kind of person I want her to grow up to be and what type of values I should try to instill in her. One of the things that I care most about is the environment. I think often about the kind of world that Zoe and her children (someday a LONG way off) will grow up in. So, when I thought about what to get Zoe for her birthday I really wanted to get her something this year that she and I could do together to learn and talk about the environment.

When I reflect on my own childhood and try to recall when exactly it was that I realized that the environment was REALLY, REALLY important and that it was something I should care about, my mind wanders back to the primary wing of Duniway Elementary School in Portland, Oregon. Specifically i recall this great animated movie that we watched a few times a year: Dr. Suess's "The Lorax".

Without telling you the whole story...Long before saving the earth became a global concern, Dr. Seuss, speaking through his character the Lorax (who speaks for the trees), warned against mindless progress and the danger it posed to the earth's natural beauty.

So, I bought a copy of the book for her birthday. This book was truly ahead of its time when it

comes to protecting our environment through conservationism. Even better, this book is printed on recycled paper. I of course read it again before I wrapped it.

Happy Birthday Buggie! I hope you love this book as much as I do!!! May we spend many years learning about and caring for the envirnment together.

Organic Crib Mattresses + Organic Children's Mattresses

Baby and Children’s mattresses typically use materials such as vinyl/PVC and polyurethane foam which release questionable chemicals over time. Babies in particular spend up to 70% of their early life sleeping and playing on a crib mattress. We firmly believe that your baby’s health and safety should not be negotiable. So, we revisited an article that we recently read about the Five Primary Problems with Kids Mattresses and we wanted to share them with you.

THE FIVE PROBLEMS
Over the last 30+ years, crib mattress materials have been replaced with cheap petroleum-based synthetics. Nearly all crib mattresses today contain polyurethane foam, vinyl (PVC), phthalates, chemical fire retardants, and an extensive list of added industrial chemicals. Recent studies have questioned the use of these materials. Some of these chemicals have even been shown to leach out into the surrounding air.

This report, “Five Problems With Crib Mattresses,” was intended to highlight the potential dangers of using crib mattresses composed of vinyl (polyvinyl chloride or PVC), phthalates, polyurethane foam, harsh chemical fire retardants, and other chemical additives. It is becoming increasingly clear that toxic chemicals are affecting our children. A primary source of toxic chemicals in the environment of a child during its first few years of life is the mattress and bedding. Removing potentially harmful chemicals from these prominent objects represents a prudent approach for concerned parents and their doctors.

Here is a very brief overview of some specific concerns with crib mattresses detailed in the article:

Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC), the surface material used in nearly all crib mattresses, is widely considered to be one of the most toxic and environmentally unfriendly plastics in use today.

Phthalates, associated with asthma, reproductive effects, and cancer, make up 30% by weight of the PVC surface of a typical crib mattress. Phthalates are not bound to the plastic and leach out.

The FDA and Consumer Product Safety Commission have issued general warnings regarding the use of phthalates, yet the PVC surfaces of crib mattresses still contain phthalates.

DEHP (the most commonly used phthalate in crib mattresses), together with several other phthalates, have already been banned across Europe for use in many children’s products.

The PVC surface of a typical crib mattress is also treated with toxic fire retardant chemicals such as antimony. Various biocides are often added as well.

Polyurethane foam, the predominant filling material used in crib mattresses, typically contains various problematic ingredients including chemical catalysts, surfactants, emulsifiers, pigments, and other chemical additives. These frequently include formaldehyde, benzene, toluene, and other well established toxic chemicals.

Polyurethane foam (essentially solid petroleum) is extremely flammable. To combat this hazard, industrial toxic fire retardants are added. The most common chemical fire retardant used to treat polyurethane foam has been pentaBDE, a toxin associated with hyperactivity and neurobehavioral alterations.

PentaBDE is not bound to the foam, and leaches out into the surrounding air.

PentaBDE has recently been banned in Europe. It has also been banned by the State of California as of 2006. However, there is currently no planned government action to recall the millions of crib mattresses presently in use that contain pentaBDE.

Children are far more vulnerable to toxic chemicals than adults, especially within their first few years of life. Considering that children spend up to 70% of their early life on a crib mattress, it would be prudent to use materials that don’t contain such dangerous chemicals -- at least that's how we think. So, we have decided to up our commitment to providing an organic sleep opportunity for all. The pacifiers are at the same time very hygienic because they are molded in one piece. This means, that there is no joining or crack where dirt and bacteria can accumulate. Conventional pacifiers usually has a joining where the mouthpiece and its shield are joined, this is always difficult to keep clean

The pacifiers will slightly change colour during use. After 4-5 weeks of use, it will have taken a more dark colour, and is about to be exchanged.

An exciting announcement from Offi: the Nest Nursery Collection designed by Scott Wilson has made a new home + has gotten cozy with Offi! After a 1 year hiatus from the market, the Nest Nursery Collection is back for the lovin' and will be available on poshbaby.com.

Currently the Nest Collection includes the bassinet (shown above left + right) which converts into a toy box (or a pint size yacht?) and play table, as well as the impressive Nest Crib. Both pieces are available in Walnut or Maple Veneer.

Internationally respected designer, Scott Wilson (also the designer of this watch) joins the esteemed design partners at Offi to deliver unique and fresh ideas for the home. I am so excited to see what else is on the horizon!
